The bindery is in Calenzano, near Prato, which had a strong textile industry. The lenticulars are manufactured in Italy and each one is secured to the book by hand with strong, double-sided tape. They showed us an invitation from one of McQueen’s last runway shows featuring a lenticular image, which shifted from a portrait of McQueen to a patterned skull depending on how we angled the card. Early in the planning, the exhibition’s curator Andrew Bolton and I met with the representatives from the McQueen organization in the Museum’s staff café. With most books, we go through many rounds of cover designs, and it is often hard to get consensus on the right image. We had to start printing the book in February so that copies would arrive from the Italian printer in time for the show’s opening in May.Ĭould you speak about the origins of the catalogue’s iconic cover image? We shot the photographs in December 2010, on a very fast schedule. The models we hired had worked as dress models for McQueen, so they were familiar with wearing his garments. All the works were part of McQueen’s archive and we photographed them there. You were able to photograph McQueen’s works on live models because they weren’t accessioned Museum objects, right? For this reason, no one may wear a garment after it enters the collection. The dramatic movement of the costumes shown in this photograph was only possible with live models.Īs with any works of art in The Met collection, the staff preserves and protects all accessioned costumes from deterioration. Andrew Bolton, “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” As a designer, he doggedly promoted freedom of thought and expression and championed the authority of the imagination.” “Like Byron, Beethoven, and Delacroix, McQueen is an exemplar of the Romantic individual, the hero-artist who staunchly followed the dictates of his inspiration. The shots are dramatic and better reflect how McQueen’s clothes are made to be seen. Their focus is on the clothing, and the garments look natural because they were photographed on living bodies. The final images, which kept the hands and eliminated the hardware, worked. It was fine to be dark, but we didn’t want the images to be creepy. The first test shots came back with some of the model’s hands and heads edited out and replaced with hardware. It was Sundsbø’s idea to make the live models look like mannequins using white body paint and post-production retouching. One of the things that made the Savage Beauty catalogue such a success is the evocative imagery by fashion photographer Sølve Sundsbø, and I think readers might be interested to know that there is a little more to the photographs than meets the eye. Look a little closer-that isn’t a mannequin on the right! I spoke with Gwen Roginsky-who has served as the publication director and production manager of Costume Institute books for twenty years-about her experience working on the Museum’s best-selling publication to date. Written by Andrew Bolton-with an introduction by fashion journalist Susannah Frankel and an interview with Alexander McQueen’s creative director, Sarah Burton, conducted by Tim Blanks-this stunning book remains an essential publication on the groundbreaking artistry of this provocative designer. This year we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the exhibition and its publication, which has sold over 340,000 copies and counting. Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty opened at The Met in 2011. Ductal, lobular solid, and mixed-type (ductal and lobular) tumors have a 10-year OS in only 50% of cases. These tumors have a 10-year overall survival (OS) in 80% of cases. Histologically, tubular, mucinous, tubulolobular, and cribriform breast tumors have the best prognoses. In clinical stage I, some studies have reported a recurrence risk of 38% when lymphovascular invasion (LVI) is present in comparison to 22% in cases where LVI is absent however, some studies have not found any differences. This prognostic factor has a significant relevance in patients with small tumors and negative LNs. Grade 3 tumors have a relative recurrence risk of 4.4 times higher compared to the reference group. According to these characteristics, tumors can be well-, medium-, and poorly-differentiated (grades 1, 2, or 3, resp.). The Scarff-Bloom Richardson (SBR) grading system takes into account the mitotic index and the differentiation and pleomorphism of the tumor. Tumor grade has also been widely accepted as a prognostic factor. Patients with tumors that were smaller than 1 cm in diameter had an overall 5-year survival rate of 99%, whereas patients with tumors of 3–5 cm in diameter had a survival rate of 86%. In patients with negative LN, tumor size is an independent prognostic factor of breast recurrence. There is also a direct correlation of positive LN status with the risk of distant recurrence. Patients with cancer-positive LN have been reported to have a four to eight times higher mortality rate in comparison to patients with negative lymph nodes. The involvement of the axillary lymph nodes (LNs) is the most important prognostic factor for recurrence in the early stages of BC according to the literature. This wide range of reported results is probably due to inadequate axillary dissection, incomplete surgical technique, or suboptimal systemic treatment. Today, we are able to detect BC at earlier stages however, according to the literature, cases of locoregional and distant recurrences have been reported in 5 to 40% of cases. For example, in the USA, stage 0 or I disease was found in 56% of cases in 1995 in comparison to only 45% in 1985. The introduction of mammography screening protocols in recent decades has facilitated the detection of breast cancer at increasingly earlier stages. In Mexico in 2007, there were 16,340 reported hospitalizations for breast cancer and 4,872 breast cancer-related deaths. The lifetime risk for developing breast cancer has been reported to be as high as 12%, whereas the risk of death has been reported to be as high as 5%. Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer among American women, with more than 200,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Super easy to use, and super easy to figure out. He wants to understand how its members thought. As a devout Catholic, he is troubled that so many of Dreyfus's tormentors came from the Catholic right. I don't know what I will do, but of one thing I am certain – I will not take this secret to the grave."īut Read has greater ambitions than simple storytelling. "If you keep quiet, no one will know." Picquart allegedly responded: "What you're saying is vile. "What does it matter to you if that Jew stays on Devil's Island?" Read quotes the deputy chief of the General Staff asking Picquart, after evidence of Esterhazy's guilt had come to light. And, like nearly all historians of the affair, he makes a hero of the high-ranking officer who came to Dreyfus's defence at great risk to himself, Colonel Georges Picquart. The pages on Devil's Island are brilliantly vivid, showing the toll taken by the unrelenting heat and damp, permanent shackles, stinging insects and rodents.ĭreyfus took refuge in books – Shakespeare, Montaigne, works of history – only to find them attacked as well: "Vermin got into them, gnawed them, and laid their eggs in them." Read has obvious admiration for the young Lucie Dreyfus, who stood by her husband even after learning of his serial adulteries. He does a particularly good job with Dreyfus himself, whom he portrays as stiff, humourless and inhibited, but also possessing inner reserves of strength that allowed him to survive his atrocious ordeal. What Read does bring to bear is a keen and practised sense of how to sketch characters, and to tell their stories. Read's lack of expertise in French history comes through in the first pages of the book, in which he confuses the old regime's first and second estates, and the French revolution's cult of reason and cult of the supreme being. The first two parts of the book, taking the story up through Dreyfus's condemnation and imprisonment, rely almost entirely on published histories, and cite fewer than 10 original sources at first hand. In this company, Piers Paul Read's The Dreyfus Affair feels somewhat poorly timed and redundant, and all the more so since it is based on a very thin job of research. In The Man on Devil's Island, Harris brought "Dreyfusard" intellectuals down from their pedestal, arguing that their victory, while undoubtedly heroic, helped to commit the French republic to a rigid and even intolerant secularism whose damaging consequences are felt to this day. It also includes a provocative study by Ruth Harris, one of the best living historians of this period. The story of the affair has been told hundreds of times, and the last six years have seen a particular profusion of Dreyfusiana, including Vincent Duclert's 1,259-page biography of Dreyfus, as well as taut, readable surveys by the lawyer and novelist Louis Begley and the literary biographer Frederick Brown. A full vindication did not come until 1906. But even then a second court martial confirmed the sentence against Dreyfus. Soon afterwards, Henry was correctly accused of fabricating key evidence in the case and slit his throat with a razor. A massive public campaign condemning the injustice culminated in Émile Zola's brilliant 1898 polemic "J'accuse!". It helped to convince the high command, their political backers and a substantial portion of French public opinion to defend the conviction, even as evidence mounted that Dreyfus – by now serving a life sentence on Devil's Island – was innocent. Antisemitism contributed mightily to his conviction in a farcically mishandled court martial. It was no coincidence that the wrongly arrested officer, Alfred Dreyfus, was a Jew. Yet this comedy of errors gave rise to a massive scandal that wrecked lives, unleashed a torrent of prejudice, and for a time seemed to be pushing France towards the brink of civil war. And when the French finally pieced the note together and realised they had a traitor on their hands, they arrested the wrong man, despite the handwriting evidence that clearly pointed in Esterhazy's direction. They then sat, unexamined, for a month, because the responsible official, Hubert-Joseph Henry, had left on an extended hunting trip. She promptly delivered them to French military intelligence. A month later, Schwartzkoppen received a note from Esterhazy referring to classified material, tore it up, and left the pieces in his wastepaper basket for his French cleaning lady, whom he considered an idiot. On the afternoon of 20 July 1894, a French army officer named Ferdinand Esterhazy walked into the German embassy in Paris and offered to sell secrets to the military attaché, Maximilian von Schwartzkoppen. It's not exactly a story worthy of John le Carré. Yet many countries invest little in child protection and welfare. Over the long term, this translates into improved education and health status, higher individual productivity in adulthood, fewer social problems, and, ultimately, poverty reduction. Evidence shows that children who are protected and raised in safe and nurturing families are more likely to reach their physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development milestones. This early exposure to serious child adversity sparked my interest in the role of child welfare and protection within the global development agenda. Too many of those institutions still exist in the region to this day. During those early visits, I was struck by the heavy reliance of the Soviet system on child institutionalization and witnessed the horrific conditions faced by children placed in those institutions. We were tasked with helping countries across that region to address the substantial economic, social, and political ramifications of their transition to newly independent states-particularly in the health, education, and social protection sectors. What is the state of world’s children, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, and what can foreign policy and development practitioners do to improve the lives of children? To explore these and related questions, Religion & Diplomacy editor Judd Birdsall interviewed Philip Goldman, the founder and president of Maestral International. Rock Pick- Invaluable tool when prospecting.Water- For both drinking and to reveal colors on dusty stones.Once you begin to learn how stones collect in the area, you’ll be able to quickly find areas that are likely sources. Riverbeds collect stones over time, and dry ones are a treasure trove. Walking riverbeds is the best way to find jasper nodules in an area. The satellites aren’t perfect, but you can sometimes see large color changes on the ground and it never hurts to know how to get around. Scouting areas with Google Maps can often help. For instance, you can find club field guides that provide a realistic overview of most areas. I’ve found that going through different sources provides good information. On that note, Google can be tricky when you’re looking for specific areas. It’s a lot easier to find them initially if you know what you’re looking for. Search online for areas near you that may have jasper. Prospecting for jasper can be done very casually, and you may find some striking local varieties. You’re not out of luck if your home state isn’t listed above. Jaspers often occur in considerable quantities, so finding specimens of most types is easy. In the United States, it’s common, but the most sought after varieties come from the following states: Jasper varies a lot in appearance, however, and the variety in your own backyard may not be what you’re looking for. Jasper, like agate, can be found in most places that formerly had volcanic activity. Most other jasper group stones aren’t fake, they occur in large enough deposits that it’s not profitable to create fakes. Testing is usually easy, most will burn readily if you apply a hot nail or needle to the stone. They’re not always clearly labeled, but if the price is too good to be true then… well, you’re probably not getting a good deal. Imperial Jasper is a pricey stone, so there are quite a few artificial substitutes out there. Related: How Much Is Jasper Worth? (And Where To Sell It) Buyer Beware: Fake Jaspers It’s no wonder that the stuff is a favorite of collectors There’s an endless variety of jasper out there, and each stone produces its own unique pattern. Bumblebee Jasper also falls into this category, it’s actually a calcite mineral colored with pyrite, arsenic, and sulfur. One of the most famous is Dalmation Jasper, which is a microcrystalline silica stone instead of a cryptocrystalline stone. There are also quite a few stones called jasper in their common name that consist of different minerals than true jasper. Many jasper patterns have distinct names, and other jaspers are called for their place of origin. That’s just a small sample of the offerings out there. It’s not named for its colors(which vary across the spectrum from blue to green to red) but instead for the fact that the deposits are often marine and only accessible at low tide. Ocean Jasper is an orbicular jasper that occurs in Madagascar. These often form the illusion of rolling hills, mountains, and other idyllic landscapes. Landscape Jasper are Earth-toned jaspers which display a “landscape” when cut. The most common forms are cemented with grey chalcedony between red and yellow jasper but there is a multitude of different colors available. In the modern market there are a lot of composites under the same name, be sure of what you’re buying! Brecciated Jasperīrecciated jasper nodules are broken up internally and cemented with chalcedony. Imperial Jasper is a green form of jasper that is considered one of the rarest. Some of the commonly used names for jasper varieties are: Imperial Jasper Some varieties also have their own names and specific colors. Jaspers, like agates, have a loose classification system based on how their surface patterns emerge. They’re surprisingly common in many parts of the United States. Jasper nodules can often be found in riverbeds anywhere near ancient volcanic activity. Jasper is an igneous rock but it often occurs in larger formations than agate. Jasper’s deep colors and opacity stem from impurities in the silica. The crystals in a cryptocrystalline stone are hard to find even with a microscope. While they’re made of the same stuff as regular quartz crystals, the crystal structure is entirely different. Jaspers exist on a continuum of cryptocrystalline quartz. Generally, the stone will have some kind of pattern as well, even if it’s within a single hue. A true jasper blocks all light, although some brecciated jaspers will have pockets of chalcedony in them. Jasper is distinct from agate due to its opacity. Jasper is usually characterized by bright colors, including green, red, blue, and many others. Jasper is a form of cryptocrystalline silicon dioxide(SiO₂ or silica) that’s opaque. |
